Fraser Car Club Turkey Trot - Auckland

Don‘t be a “Turkey”.....Be at my place Sunday  27 May, 1.00pm for the start at 1.30pm

Each car will get a map and instruction to peruse and calculate/nominate your time to drive the course. There is a good mixture of 50, 70, 80 and 100Km/hr speed sections to make your calculations irrelevant!!.. ..

I am sure there will be some people with excellent head clocks to run some statistical averages and guess work that will be astounding close to your completed time..... or not.
 
Please remember to bring a $2 gold coin for the divvy, we will have first, second and a Turkey prize.
 
Watches, Mobile phones and of course GPS’s and any other time measuring devices are not allowed to be referred to during the drive and will be deposited in a sealed envelope, but carried in your car in case of emergencies. You will need a working speedo and may use your trip meter if fitted... although how this will make your time more accurate is anyone’s guess.
 
Finishing is at the same place as last year as it is really convenient for this event clocking you all in.
 
Last year Des and April finished within 20 seconds of their nominated time.

The route will take less than an hour, not too strenuous, with some basic navigation instructions and no secret check points.

Track Day at Night

On Friday 4th May at about 3:30pm with DMOFSR loaded I made my way down to Hampton Downs to meet Andrew, Hamish and Brett for our first ever track day at night.

Playday on track was hosting their first ever event at night. We arrived close to dusk and by the time we had done the paper work and the briefing it was time to get in the cars ready for the first 15min session.

Gary from Playday had organised the four Frasers into our own grid. We went off for a warm up lap and then we were into it and the first session was over before it got truly dark, so by the time we got back in and had a debrief amongst ourselves the other group had done their session and it was time for our second.

It was now truly dark! We left as per last time with a warm up lap but then our first fast lap was an experience, driving at speed in the dark even on a familiar track doesn't count for a thing, corners start later, they also finish earlier and braking points disappear. But aside from this what an amazing experience, it is a experience that needs to be had.

Brake dust sparking off the wheels like a sparkler at Guy Fawkes, exhausts shooting flames that light up the night sky, another sense that is overloaded. After our first session we came in buzzing and couldn't stop laughing and trading stories about how familiar corners all of a sudden became unfamiliar, but we all survived.

We had two more sessions before the night was over and it only got better the cars performed with the colder, dense air, the stories kept coming and the event only got better. All in all we had approx one hours worth of track time with most of it in the dark and so much fun with the only casualty of the night being the bird that Brett caught with his headlight, that was a bit slow off the mark, although in the night what was left of the bird made a good point for the headlights to pick up and head for.

Playday have another night event coming up on the 8th June it's $75 per driver and it's worth every cent. We will definitely be going again and we will send out another email to remind everyone closer to the  night. It would be great to get a heap of Frasers out there experiencing it together. Clubman Navigation Run - The Dirty Version

Gary (the Auckland Fraser Car Club rep) organised a navigation run last weekend.  I still giggle when I think about it, so it's worth a candid report. 

Around 12 clubmans met at the southern BP for a Sunday trip around the countryside. Gary is ex Airforce, so we left 11:30am on the dot and arrived at our destination 8 minutes early (enough time to have a chat and head on inside for a drink and bite to eat, anyway I digress).

We all were given our maps and directions.  Nice and simple <insert Tui add here> - if you don't get that joke you will by the time you have finished reading this.

So we headed off one at a time, whilst the drivers eyes were on the road the navigators sat smugly looking at the directions which states 'the navigator is always right'.  First direction easy; leave BP, second; take first exit, then turn right.  Done, simple I thought, this will be a piece of cake.  Next instruction straight and then named 3 roads, okay, I will keep an eye out on the name changes along the stretch of road we're headed down.  We travel ahead and a sign to the right names the second road on the 'straight ahead list'
Scott: we need to turn right
Ida: Gary has said straight, we need to go straight
Scott: but it is on the right
Ida: the navigator is always right *grimace, hoping like heck*

With that we see another Fraser heading back the way we had just come from.  We travel another kilometre or so
Ida: turn around and take that turn where you saw the road sign
Scott: but you said straight ahead
Ida: but the navigator is always right

That set the scene for the rest of the trip. We came to a direction where we were meant to turn right and met up with two other cars (including the person who wrote the navigation run), if he didn't know where he was going, who did?

We barreled straight through rather than right and it turned out to be correct. Then we hit the gravel, awesome rally moment.  Others were a little more cautious through that section.

I can't remember exactly when, but there was a section that took us through a lot of cow sh*t. The car was covered
Scott: what's that?  Is is poo?  Touches fresh brown 'mud' and sniffs
Ida: Ewwwwwww I can't believe you just touched that, let alone sniffed it
Scott: is it on my face?
Ida: well it's on your hand and may as well be on your nose *crying with laughter*
It was on guards, on roll-bar, on hats, on dash, on jackets and yes, there was a little on us. The cows had been busy on that part of the road.

We arrived at the final destination after deciding to ignore all arrows, straight aheads and general directions and purely look out for the street names.  Just as well, here's one of the last navigation instructions.

Everybody made it back. Some took some time. It was obvious who hadn't completed the whole run, they had clean cars, the rest of ours were dirty to say the least.

A brilliant run, great turnout and an unforgettable day. Many thanks for organising it Gary and thanks to all that took part.

Clubman Navigation Run

Join  us for a run in the country on Sunday 29th.
A little navigation exercise for the passenger , nothing to difficult and probably in a bit of Auckland you haven’t been before, but have may have flown over and wondered what it is like down there?
Easy country roads so the directions shouldn’t shake around too much!
 
Meet at the Southern BP at 11.00am, quick coffee and a start at 11.30am.
Weather at this stage is looking okay with a sunny day and light winds predicted but with showers on Sat and Mon so I will confirm it is all go on Friday afternoon.

Gymkhana - Hampton Downs

Bridgestone used DMOFSR as part of their amazing two day event at Hampton Downs.  Bridgestone reported that DMOFSR did something like 250 runs of the Gymkhana in 2 days, every one with a different driver and it never missed a beat. Was an awesome addition to the event. Everyone wanted another go!

Clubman S at Manfeild

We just got a very cool email from a Fraser owner.  He took his 4AGE powered Fraser Clubman S for his first dual car sprint.  Here's a few words and the video he sent us.

This is so much fun, and I just love the Blacktop/T50 combination. I always thought I’d be looking to “upgrade” to a 3SGE at some stage, not now, these engines are great and so much fun.
 
1.24 is considered pretty good at Manfeild I hear, just loving it.

  

Clubman Video

A Fraser Car Club run was organised on Sunday 15 April to coincide with a video shoot for a student in their final year of a media degree. 

Fraser Cars asked Fraser Car Club members to take time out of their Sunday and join us for some driving and filming.  There's that saying ask and you shall receive, 10 Frasers, one other Lotus 7 replica, two Ferraris and a Vauxhall joined in the fun.  A fantastic turn out for a drizzly Sunday which had a lot of other motorsport events on.

The run went from the Fraser factory, along the northern motorway, there was a convoy through the tunnel, the noise was awesome. We headed to Morris and James in Matakana for lunch and then climbed up a twisty, high road for some final out of car and in car filming before heading home.

Thank you to the Auckland rep, Gary, for organising and all the Fraser Car Club members who joined us. Some members travelled far, tip of the hat to them. For the rest that would like a peek, here's some photos from the day.
